Why I Gave Up Being Pope

The short answer is: it leads to chaos and I’m searching for peace and strength. For the longer reply, read on.

Recently a video titled "Why I Hate Religion but Love Jesus" made the rounds in my circle of Facebook peeps and then a reply by my friend, Fr. Andrew, came down the pike and the comments and feedback exploded. See the video and Fr. Andrew's reply here.

Wow! Many a feather are ruffled when it comes to talk about Jesus and “organized religion”. The creator of the video, Jefferson Bethke, laments the disparity he sees between the two, in popular rap style which apparently made thousands swoon. I might be content to let sleeping dogs lie on this one if it weren’t for the fact that I’m gearing up to write posts bridging the gap, albeit simply, between Protestantism and Orthodoxy. The fact is, the friction illustrated by the video and subsequent response in blog posts and comments is a perfect starting point for my next series.

Why do so many see Jesus Christ as opposed to “organized religion”? Why are some content to leave all that church stuff behind and forge onward with Jesus in one hand and the Bible in the other? God has given me intellect, you might say, and that is enough to read and apply His Word to my life. It’s just me ‘n Jesus and that’s all I really need.

Except for the fact there’s always that niggling little thing in Scripture that’s not quite understood...not quite clear. And so, we’ll seek either one of several paths: read commentaries to gain understanding, ask a pastor or other trusted, knowledgeable individual, or maybe peruse other verses believing that all Scripture is interpreted by other Scripture. Oh, I nearly forgot that other path: toss it out.

That’s the jewel, or the abyss depending on your perspective, of American Protestantism and it’s one of the major reasons why I left the Protestant realm and found a hospital for my soul in the Orthodox Church.

Let me explain that a little further. If you’re a serious student of God’s Word and honest, you’ll know that all things written there are not crystal clear. Some verses need explaining, require context and an understanding of the language. Inevitably, there needs to be something else with which to understand Scripture. Otherwise the Ethiopian eunuch would not have asked for understanding of the Scripture he read (Acts 8:26-40). When you take in the landscape of American christian organizations you can see the essence of this Scriptural conundrum; we have literally thousands of Protestant denominations. Why? Because each leader of each congregation says, essentially, “I have the answers. I have the proper interpretation and understanding of Scripture. I have the Holy Spirit that leads me into understanding. I am Pope; I get to decide.” You see where I’m going with this? If all these pastors have the “correct” lens with which to view Scripture, how can they all be TRUE? Is the Holy Spirit divided? And what happens when my church has a division? How do I know which leader’s viewpoint and congregation is the one to follow? aagghh... it’s up to me to arbitrate Truth; that’s so much pressure!

For many years I followed a variety of those aforementioned paths when I encountered something from the Bible I didn’t quite understand. Or, more importantly, I sought for wisdom when my own denomination (American Baptist) was taking a turn in the theology they had held since their inception. If Jesus Christ is unchanging, (Hebrews 13:8), how can the teachings of Christ change? Our culture evolves but Christ does not. Praise God! he is the same yesterday, today and forever...It is only in this way that we have a foundation at all; Truth is what holds the world.

When I discovered that this church - this body of believers- existed who held onto Truth since the day of the apostles, who held onto the traditions of the faith, whether by word or epistle (2 Thess. 2:15), I knew I was home. After a tiring journey of much debate, theological posturing and apathy, it felt good to rest in the arms of the Church. I am not the arbitrator of Truth. Truth IS, whether I acknowledge it or not... just as the world is round whether people living on it recognize it or not. It’s unchanging and fixed. Hallelujah! I don’t have to be Pope!

Now FreeThinkers invariably say, ‘Fine. You’ve simply forfeited your right to think for yourself by resting in those boundaries set forth by the Church.’ I disagree. I see it more like using my freethinking- freewill - abilities to craft a raft with which to abandon survival mode and float down the river toward civilization. I have found that Rock that informs and nourishes my entire being.

What I find humorous about the atheists and agnostics is the fact that they refuse to ask certain questions. But of course, they have to, in order to maintain the finesse of their lightweight paradigm. A paradigm that never investigates its own foundation because they know it’s detrimental to do so. Asking about origins is fruitless to them who have a great faith in the things that are; exonerating the leaf to be free of the tree. Origins don’t matter to those whose existence is based upon reason, logic and empirical proofs. It’s really not so humorous, but rather sad. I think people who hail free thinking often have ailing spirits, as they are rarely nourished. How can one nurture what they don’t know to exist?

Church as Hospital

In the video by Bethke, he says that church should be a hospital and I agree. I take it from his angry approach, however, that he didn’t experience it this way. How dismal and misguided is it to say you love the Bridegroom but hate the Bride?

When I began attending the Orthodox Church in 2004, it was, in every instance, a hospital for my soul. A non-Orthodox person once described an Orthodox worship service as “listening to the sounds of God” and I can relate to that. The sounds you hear in an Orthodox service are otherworldly... the English and Arabic chanting, the bells, the censor, the prayers of the people, the out-of-view choir all add a beautiful dimension to worshipping God.

It’s a mystery how God ministered to my soul during those early years in the Orthodox Church. I might say it was in the lighting of candles or smelling that heavenly incense...or the kindness of an elderly gentleman who shared his antidoron (blessed bread) with me during a particularly deep valley in my life. Maybe it was the homily and hearing the words of God being read...maybe it was the reality of what ‘sacred’ truly means. Maybe it was the beauty and thoughtfulness provoked by the numerous icons. I can more easily define what it wasn’t.

It was not the friendliness or the social aspect of church at all; indeed, I deliberately avoided this. It wasn’t the books I read from the church library or the sweets offered at coffee hour or the numerous children’s programs and opportunities. No, it was none of that. It was something intangible, yet profoundly palpable because my soul experienced healing through Divine Liturgy at the Orthodox Church. A peace and stability was evident there. Worship through all my senses was present there. Worship with my mind, body and spirit was present there...

God touched me and lifted my spirit through Orthodox worship...it really was -and is- as simple as that.

Praise Him who bestows grace upon His unworthy servants!

Lesson on Love and Letting Go

Fr. David, in his final podcast from Afghanistan, enunciated clearly something I’ve thought of writing about for some time: lessons on love and letting go. It’s been a painful life lesson, but a necessary one in my spiritual growth and so, I’m thankful for it. Perhaps now that some time has passed and my perspective is better, it’s worth sharing.

I have learned, in a very intense way, over the past 5 years that I do not love others as I should. Christ tells us to love others as ourself and to even love our enemies. But what does that mean exactly? How easy it is to love those who love us back... and how difficult is it to love those who do not love us in return. I am speaking of relationships and friendships in particular. I’m talking about how good it is to share our life with one we trust and confide in, the joy that comes with being understood and nurtured by others’ words and actions. And the pain that comes when all that ends...abruptly and without explanation. Maybe you’ve been there.

Listening to Fr. David this morning and analyzing the events in my own life, I feel as though this lesson has come full circle for me. I pray it’s one I don’t forget and choose rather to learn from it and grow because of the wisdom within. In my experience, I learned that I was loving other people, but with strings attached. I wanted something in return, I wanted to have my needs met, too. My need for companionship and being heard. And when they weren’t, I felt hurt and disappointed...and even angry. And it made me question the motives of my heart: Did I really love and care about this person at all? Or was it a purely selfish relationship? Caring just enough so that my own needs were met?

I realized that our feelings can be deceptive and that sometimes God crosses our paths with others for a very specific purpose. If we have our eyes fixed upon that, upon Him, then we are less deceived by the ever changing currents of our hearts. When we truly love another person, as Christ intends, there are no strings attached. It’s selfless and kind...generous and peaceable....expecting nothing in return. How many of us truly love like that? I want to love like that...but I know it’s attainable only by the grace of God. I’m not equipped for it, as I am a very weak vessel. Through Christ, though, all things are possible. I have realized the peace that comes on the other side of pain, the clarity that comes with wisdom and of love born from the eternal source of love, Christ Jesus our God.

This lesson, too, has deepened my love for the Prayer of St. Francis, whereby I am encouraged to seek to console rather than being consoled, to understand rather than to be understood. It’s complete selflessness. It's loving fully, but lightly...being willing to share and give and comfort and then let go. It’s having your cup filled with the grace of God so that you have something to give another, not wanting nor expecting anything in return.

Izzy's Christmas

Izzy, Christmas 2011

What a fun time we all had this past Christmas! Thanks to ALL of you out there across the globe who took the time to send a happy Christmas greeting to Izzy and her family! As you may have read here previously, Izzy never actually made a request for a million Christmas cards, but she has enjoyed receiving them nonetheless. We didn’t make an official count, but the cards came in by the thousands. Our family divided them up between 3 households in order to open them all before Valentine’s Day.

Izzy especially loved the ones that had an animal on the card and we all enjoyed the handmade creations, ornaments, bracelets and other crafts. A lady sent in one with a photo of her pet duck and her story and this made Izzy smile BIG : D Other folks drew pictures or made puzzles for Izzy, sent coloring sheets and cards that played music...some sent money or gift cards or candy...the list of colorful creations and warm wishes seems almost endless!

Many schools sent stacks of cards and I was touched by the sentiments expressed by children. Reading through those leaves no doubt as to why Christ says we must become as children or we’ll never enter heaven. The faith and joy revealed through their words is incredibly uplifting and I know we’ll read these again and again through the years. Of the relatively small portion of cards that my mom went through, over 20 states were represented as well as numerous countries, including Germany, Ireland, Korea, France, Israel, Afghanistan and Thailand. She received warm wishes from a few famous people too, such as our former governor, now US Senator, Joe Manchin, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Beiber and several women vying for Miss USA.

Thanks again, for taking the time to bring cheer not only to Izzy, but the entire family.

In other news, our family celebrated Christmas like always, with a large gathering including lots of food, toys and laughter. Even though I was disappointed not to have a white Christmas, the mild weather did allow us to visit the ice arena where Izzy put on ice skates for the first time....

A Beacon in Afghanistan; thank you Romania!

Orthodox Chapel at Kandahar Air Base

Did you know about the only existing christian church in Afghanistan? In a country where over 90% of the population is either sunni muslim or another muslim sect, it must be an incredible and often heartwarming sight for christian military to see that cupola from the air field at Kandahar.

The building of this church isn’t recent news, but it was new information for me to learn yesterday while listening to a podcast by Fr. David Alexander on Ancient Faith Radio. Fr. David is an Orthodox priest and military chaplain serving our U.S. forces in Afghanistan, although I believe he has returned to the states at this point.

From him I learned the story of how this beautiful little chapel came into being:

When the seven coalition countries first came to Afghanistan to provide the initial diplomatic and military response to the attacks of 9/11, Romania was one of those countries. Each host nation built their own compound at Kandahar and Romania desired a church to be a part of their compound. One of their contacts from back home in Transylvania, Romania sent photos of a monastic chapel. From these photographs, an ethnically Romanian, American civil engineer along with the Romanians and Americans built this chapel in a matter of days. The chapel is complete with an altar, a full iconostasis and even a bell house out front.

Fr. David describes it as a place where “beauty meets simplicity” and likens the church to St. Vladimir’s Seminary Chapel (New York) and St. Herman’s Chapel in Kodiak, Alaska. How wonderful to hear of such a rich jewel in an otherwise barren and camouflaged landscape.

Listening to Fr. David speak of the hospitality of the Romanians and the diverse worship services held in this chapel, including Americans,Canadians, Russian contractors, Macedonians, Bulgarians and Dutch military, calls to mind a beautiful image of Afghanistan. May the Lord bless and preserve those in defense of freedom everywhere...and may our Lord touch many more souls through the example of those who serve Him.

...to show you miracles. Not many nations around the world understand the persecution of christianity as well as the Russian people. Today Russia is witnessing the restoration of nearly 30,000 churches and monasteries; a monumental rebirth of Orthodoxy! The fact that this extraordinary exhibition, celebrating Christ and His Church, would take place around their country is nothing short of amazing. I agree with what others in the Orthodox community have said, seeing the striking images of persecution (about mid-way through) under communism is powerful...!

Protecting Peace

A joyous 2012 to you! I hope your new year is off to a good start, with warm remembrances from 2011 and a positive outlook for this new year. I don’t make resolutions, but prefer to set goals. The difference? Resolution seems the weak counterpart to goal... resolution implies ‘I’ll do my best’, while a goal sets the standard and provides a path to tread. At least, that’s how I see it.

One of my goals for 2012 is to protect peace. I’m speaking of inner peace, that blissful state free of misleading emotions that allows for clear thinking and decision making. That inner place that is filled with God’s sustaining grace and enables the soft, still voice of God to speak and be heard. Too often I have believed this peace to be born of circumstance or environment, but it is a blessing from God and one that should be sought (Psalm 34:14) and protected. As the Lord gave to Moses, (Number 6:22-26) this priestly blessing is one of my favorite verses from Holy Scripture:

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

The following prayer made me think of something Fr. Stephen said during his homily on Sunday. Something I want to remember throughout the year: 'that person that most despises you, or you him, is not your enemy. He is a victim of your enemy, a casualty of your enemy.'

A Prayer for Peace

We thank Thee, Master and Lover of mankind, King of the ages and giver of all good things, for destroying the dividing wall of enmity and granting peace to those who seek thy mercy. We appeal to Thee to awaken the longing for a peaceful life in all those who are filled with hatred for their neighbors, thinking especially of those at war or preparing for war. Grant peace to thy servants. Implant in them the fear of Thee and confirm in them love one for another. Extinguish every dispute and banish all temptations to disagreement. For Thou art our peace and to Thee we ascribe glory: to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Izzy Update from her Mother

If you note some tension in my sister's words here, it's due to the fact that lies and misinformation persist on the internet regarding her daughter, Izzy. I'm hoping those who continue to Google about Izzy will find themselves here to read the truth:

"Ok ~ Here it goes ~ Izzy is doing VERY WELL. She's going to school each week and walking with 2 legs like a pro. Not that it's anybody's business, but Izzy IS NOT getting hospice care nor has she been at the hospital recently. For those who didn't quite understand my post before ~ I'm gonna say it one more time ~ My Almighty God from up above is taking extremely good care of Me and My Daughter. Izzy has no tubes or IVs running through her, no doctors or nurses giving chemo, no wheelchairs to depend upon and no excuses to prevent her from living the life she wants to live. Each day the Lord takes her hand and gives her the strength, happiness, and faith she needs to lead a good life. Please don't destroy that by letting pure ignorance take over your mouth. Understand?!" JC McManaway, Izzy's mother, posted on Facebook this evening, 12.20.2011

The Gift of Grace Among Tangled Webs: An Izzy Update

I write not because there is new information to share about Izzy, but because it is necessary to put into perspective the chaos occurring on some fronts of this spiritual battle. Yes, spiritual battle. Whether you believe it or not, all things of this earth have a spiritual component; we are either striving for the Kingdom of Heaven or the Kingdom of Self while walking this earth. Some are on the front lines of such battles, while others like to believe they live in the void, totally removed from any religious belief or inclination*.

For those on the front lines, this post is for you because you’ll understand what I’m talking about, knowing that Ephesians 6 belongs to you personally.

Any Christian who walks a path close to God is bound to encounter the attack of satan and his legions, indeed this is one indicator that you’re walking a path of faith. It’s the high road, the narrow way in which the saints walk and beckon you who love God and the Kingdom of Light. It’s the proverbial path less traveled, the one that takes effort, self-control, patience and perseverance, but offers greater rewards than our feeble minds can fathom.

This is the path my family treads, or attempts to tread every day. We know it’s the way and yet we’re aware of the tangled webs looming at every curve. We know that every good gift is from above and the wicked twisting of those gifts by our enemy. The internet can be a tool of God, bringing people together in prayer and thanksgiving...touching lives for good in a matter of seconds, connecting many parts of the world in less time than it takes to say morning prayers. It can also be a tool in satan’s arsenal; never doubt he knows and preys upon the weakness of men.

I will confess and tell you that one of my greatest faults is a short temper, giving in to anger that causes me to say and do things I shouldn’t...and then falling on self-righteousness to justify my actions. I struggle with it... I’m aware of how my enemy will use this characteristic against me. It’s a sticky web to fall into because when I cave to anger, I am no longer serving the Kingdom of God, I’m only serving my own chaos.

Another of those consuming webs is inherent in Facebook, the unleashing of the tongue that causes much harm (Psalms 39:1 and Proverbs 12:18). The tongue of the wise brings healing, but reckless words pierce like a sword! I could write ad nauseam about the anger I feel when reading audacious words about Izzy’s health and my sister’s beautiful family, but do you see what this accomplishes? One sin feeding into another perpetuates chaos, the black cloud of hell. God is the author of peace and clarity, conversely, satan is the author of lies, confusion and chaos. When you write on Facebook, take just a moment to consider which Kingdom you are extending.

For those who love the truth, you will want to know that Izzy is well. She is at home, joyfully anticipating Christmas, going to school, enjoying her new pets... happy! For those who do not love the truth, you probably haven’t read thus far and it doesn’t matter to you anyway. To give truth to those who do not love truth is to only give more reason for argument. My role is to steer clear of those webs of untruth, of gossip and chaos inasmuch as is possible. And, as you love our Lord and Saviour, I would encourage you dear reader, to stay away from deceit, loose tongues and gossip. Let it end with you.

Your role, as much as Izzy is concerned, is not to do constant battle with those who wish to ensnare you in rumors and gossip, it is to declare the truth in peace and let it go. It is not your role to call or message my sister and her family with every vile action or word that you hear, see or read. Doing this perpetuates chaos, not peace.

Make no mistake though, for those who are entertained by deceits or harmful words or the details of other people’s lives; it is by your neglect and indulgence that brings harm to yourself as well as others. If you wish to follow Christ, listen to His greatest commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (St. Matthew 22) Loving God means furthering the Kingdom of Light... it means practicing self-control, praying ceaselessly and using your words to bring peace, not confusion.

I am praying for all of you reading, for you must have a love of Izzy to be sharing in this post. My prayer today is that each of you will have peace, contentment and joy. It IS possible to experience God’s grace even in the mire... in fact, in my own life, I’ve experienced it time and time again and it is in this way that we can rejoice for our trials because, in the big picture, they only beckon us closer to God when we persevere and seek the Kingdom of Heaven. †

An Open Letter to the Demons of Hell

Wormwood and Screwtape*, I have no idea if you’re still employed in the service of your captain, your Father Below, but I have some words for those who do his bidding in the heart of my family:

You seek to shock, to enrage, to engulf in disbelief and anger. You think yourself so cunning and clever in driving the hammer between fatigued hearts. You think to torture and prod and bend the undead to your twisted will. And in the grand show of your malice and contempt for those who love your Enemy, you would send your dark ranks to lace the battle with mockery, lies and hot tongues to seal your prize.

You would have us within your snares, believing we are incapable to withstand such assault, taking gladness at pain amidst chaos and lies. You laugh at the ease of your task, being deceived of your absolute slavery to a consuming hate. For Your Father Below will have no equal, no individuality; you are a chained slave to one singular wickedness as you grin at a seeming victory so near.

Except, there, in the stillness of night, when just a glimmer of star shining bright escapes the cloud covered sky. There! It is the Voice ringing clear on crystal notes that beckons mortal souls to strive on, to look up and see the eagles so near and reach out for the gift of GRACE.

Give heed to that doubt ticking in the back of your skull, for while you rule this earth there is One who does not abandon His creation as they strive against you. And oh, but the weapons in our cache, that are ever unlooked for, which come raining down at the most unexpected times. I know it makes you writhe, I know your armies tremble at the power of your Enemy, our King. I know your legions have quaked at the coming of Our Lord and begged for mercy. I know of the shattering of tombs when our Lord used your strongest weapon against you! Do you think we forget!?

Do you think us all mindless spirits, numbed from flaming arrows and vice? Do the ranks not aim for the head of the serpent in times of war? So it is and has ever been that your legions will assault those on the front line, those whose lives and voices are beacons on dark hills, showering light and hope to your Enemy and all who serve Him. They come! You cannot quench the Light, though at times it is only a glimmer, it shall never be put asunder for you are unable to break it, unable to contain it for you cannot fathom its purity.

You may distort, you may twist and bend goodwill, but you are the fool, for every weapon you’ve made, there is one to destroy it and her name is HUMILITY. For her earthly raiment adorns the race you hate and she was made in the light of the Heavenly Kingdom. May the fear of her haunt you until the end of days when you shudder at your utter defeat.

Mark it well what you think is the weakness of your prey. Close in and cast your obnoxious fumes in our face and know that your nearness advances our faith and causes the beacon flame to reach higher and burn brighter. We know your aims and how you loathe the servants of your Enemy. We know we are but food to you and we know what makes you glad...

We are not as unprepared as you might think.

Beholding a Tapestry of Miracles: Izzy Update

If you are on the outside peering in, you may see the frustration amid the joy, the weariness amid the many daily activities plus sibling rivalry in full force... but there is tenderness there, too. What you cannot see and what I’m here to tell you about is the view from the other side; while you may behold the knots and loose ends, we’ve been given a glimpse of the magnificent tapestry on the other side.

The outpouring of concern and care has been and continues to be immense. My family is continually grateful, if at times, uncertain how to cope with it all. Izzy is doing well and I know I’m overdue to write an update but in truth, there isn’t much news to report. She had her full round of radiation and her pain is managed by medication, although Jenny just told me recently that she is needing it less and less. Praise God! Izzy has gone back to school and is an active little 4 year old. She gets around well with her artificial leg, even though she sometimes doesn’t want to wear it (it’s much more fun having mom & dad carry her around ; ‘ ) )

A few weeks ago, my family traveled north to Morgantown for the WVU Children’s Hospital Annual Auction & Fund Raising Banquet. It was WONDERFUL, ELECTRIC, FUN and INSPIRING!! Many of the families, whose children have received treatment, or are currently being treated, were present. It did my heart so good to see these smiling children dressed up, not only enjoying a delicious banquet with scrumptious desserts, but receiving gifts and taking part in the evenings’ activities. Soon after, they filled the dance floor and their energy was contagious! I cannot remember the last time I had danced and laughed so much!

Izzy was a little out of sorts and spent most of the evening on her daddy’s lap, but before the night was over, she danced to a Justin Bieber tune and asked her Uncle Will for a slow dance, too. Another highlight was the live auction and seeing the children’s artwork go to the highest bidder. They were all so proud, and rightly so, as their work had been selected for greeting cards as part of the Cards of Hope, sponsored by WVU Children’s Hospital. And what a BLESSING to meet Joe & Tara Quigley, the founders of Timmy’s Fund. Folks, if you ever want to witness first-hand the love and mercy of our risen Saviour, just make the acquaintance of these two people. Tara & Joe lost their son, Timmy, to cancer in December 2004. Their grief and sorrow was turned outward toward helping other families in similar situations, working to meet their needs financially and spiritually and their non-profit has grown by leaps and bounds through their tireless efforts. It was an honor to meet their family and by their work, I am humbled and inspired to do more, more, more!

Another part of this brilliant tapestry involves the working of God in others’ lives through the inspiration of Izzy. Her faith, her resilience and attitude touch so many people; we’re at a loss to count them. I’ve promised, however, to endeavor to share some of these stories with you because it’s important that you know why bad things happen to good people. Mind you, I’m not seeking to give you a definitive answer on that one, as who can know the full scope of the workings of God, but for our part, for our little place on this earth, I can tell you with certainty that Izzy’s suffering is not in vain.

This comes first and foremost from Izzy’s mother, my beloved sister and friend: Izzy is going through this battle so that others may be brought to Christ.

Let me say it again: Izzy battles cancer so that other people, from marginal christians, to atheists, to very bitter hearts, may turn toward God. Our family bears witness to this over and over again. One case in point:

About two months ago my sister calls and asks if I would be willing to go with her to a prison to visit an inmate, an old friend. I was surprised, a bit apprehensive, but when she told me of her deep conviction that God wanted her to go ... how could I not go with her. And so we went.

You have to understand that this is so out of the ordinary. We are not ones involved in prison ministry or even find it comfortable to be in that type of atmosphere, indeed, I thought Jenny was going to be physically ill when we arrived in the parking lot of the prison. But she felt this was something she had to do. We prayed together and then she went in. I waited in the car and entertained my writers mind watching the variety of people going to visit incarcerated loved ones.

Over an hour later, she emerged with a smile on her face. Her countenance was calm and assured, knowing she had done the right thing. Her purpose in the visit was to tell this old friend that she was praying for him and also to make a strong request: “Please pray for Izzy; I know you have a lot of idle time and I would appreciate it if you would pray for her.”

The friend was humbled to see her, incredulous that she had wanted to see him. He had known about Izzy and was moved by Jenny’s request.. he readily agreed to pray for her. It gave purpose to his days. We didn’t realize just how much this unexpected meeting had affected him until a visit by his sister came a few weeks later. At her brother’s bidding, she came to bring gifts to Jenny’s girls and also a letter and poem, written by her brother.

His words are too personal to share in this public forum, but suffice it to say, our whole family was moved to tears at the care and love expressed there. He wrote a poem especially for Izzy that will be treasured always. A poem in which he prompts her to turn to God in all things and know she was created by God. And I was told by his sister just recently that he carries a photo of Izzy in his Bible. It is no small thing that a radiant light would be brought forth from a soul who had been darkened by fell deeds.

Just to give you an image of that heartfelt, hand-written poem...

Remember, friends, the thief on the cross was to be with Jesus in paradise because of his humility before Christ!

Remembering Jack, part III

Last Good-bye

In the end it was colic that claimed him, a very common cause for older horses. We had hope on that first evening of vet treatment that he would rebound, but the following 12 hours proved us wrong.

around Jack's stall and prayed for him.

When I arrived back at the barn around 6 am on Wednesday, October 19, it was a pitiful scene awaiting me. Laura was in the red barn, with Jack laying down before her. I rushed in and saw that he was suffering. He kept laying his head down flat and then pulling up, as if he wanted to stand. This went on for some time and then, amazingly, he stood and so we walked around together. Ginger, the mare most devoted to him, was near and also a cat that I had not seen before. A little black and white thing. She kept coming around, rubbing against Jack's muzzle as if in greeting... or parting. I believe animals know more than us at times -they have a pure sense, uncorrupted by sin, from their Creator.

And something else I want to remember, the sky was spectacular that morning. It was still dark and the stars were amazing... very clear and Laura was naming the constellations as we slowly walked under those beautiful heavens. We walked and walked and walked... his abdominal pain was too great to stand still.

Laura told me that before I arrived, at about 5:30 am, Jack wanted to walk, so she put a halter and lead on him and followed him. He walked to their house and looked out over the fence toward the rest of the horses. Then he walked to the other end of the farm, toward the front fields, some 80 + yards in the other direction. He then returned to the barn to lay down.

As Jack & I walked together for hours that morning, I sang hymns to him, rubbed his belly and ears and prayed for him, too. I was thankful for the pain medication Laura had administered to him at 4 am. By 8:15 am, the mineral oil the vet had administered the previous evening as a remedy, came trickling- at times pouring- out his nostrils and tears welled in my eyes.

Some animals in pain and distress will lash out or become despondent..Jack did neither. He remained his gentle self until the very end; his eyes looked at me with those brown depths of sincerity, as always.

It's awful to be walking your horse to his gravesite... absolutely awful. I believe though, that it is important to be there for your pal until the very end, to send them away in an atmosphere of love. I am thankful to my vet, Dr. Lynn Sparks, for coming to meet us right away. Her exam revealed that we were doing the right thing by putting him down... a heart rate over 200 bpm, purple gums and tongue, short rapid breaths.. he was slipping away, his body shutting down. Why did I think he would live forever?

I stayed very close to his face, on the left side, speaking softly, telling him I loved him and thanking him...watching his beautiful eye. Very soon it was over. After she administered the drug, he stood on his hind legs and fell over in a sickening thud and breathed his last.

In hindsight, thinking on that exact moment, it was almost as if he was rearing up and heading to heaven. At least, I like to think so. Laura thought this, too.

I could never ask for better support and love than was shown to me by Laura & Gary and Dr. Sparks during those final hours. I also have my dad and James Green to thank for helping to dig the gravesite right away and treating Jack's body with the utmost respect and care.

Sunrise Service

My family, too, deserves much praise. We have a way of coming together when it really counts, of being there for one another in times of heartache or distress. We've always held a funeral when a beloved pet passes away and Jack was no exception.

On Sunday, the 23rd, we rose very early in order to hold a sunrise service at Jack's gravesite. We live about 40 minutes away from Beauty Mountain Farm and so, it was asking a sacrifice of our children, who love their beds on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We left a few minutes after 6 a.m. and made it in plenty of time before the rising sun.

Along with the rakes we brought to smooth out the gravesite, we had candles, a heavy, resin cross, a bible and incense. Revelation talks about incense burning in heaven, as well as horses being present in that blessed realm and so, this seemed very fitting. As the fragrant aroma of incense pleases our senses, so too, do our prayers please our Heavenly Father.

I said a prayer, asking God to have a place for Jack in heaven and that he would enter it with a mighty rush. A poem also was shared, one that had been mailed to me by another horse-loving friend. And then I spoke about the importance of animals surrounding Jesus' life on earth. They were present at His birth in the stable and one little donkey was so blessed as to carry our Saviour upon his triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The animals must be important to God, otherwise he would not have made a place for them in the ark or tell us that He knows when one sparrow falls.

Will said a few words, too, about the history of the horse as a helper to man in bringing forth food from the earth and for transportation. He mentioned the war horse as well, always willing to carry his rider into battle and even though war horses are long gone, he was sure Jack would carry me anywhere I wanted to go.

It was a beautiful, touching service and I wasn't that surprised to see the other horses looking over the rail at us, some distance away. Not surprising either that Brio stayed with us the entire time. He is one of many farm dogs at Beauty Mountain. All of them loveable, but Brio has unique qualities. He's a gentle giant of a dog, a Maremma, a watchdog and companion. He seems to me an old soul... easy to smile with his lolling tongue and wagging tail, but somber, too. He's a quiet observer and likes to be near people, especially the kids, I've noticed. Brio must have wanted to say good-bye to Jack, too.

Jack is gone but many, many wonderful memories remain. My life was made better by that gentle, benevolent soul. The world seems a bit colder now that he's gone.

As I like to imagine he entered God's Kingdom... in a mighty rush!

Jackson, May God grant you a special place in the Kingdom of Light and may God be merciful and allow me to see you again someday.

Milestones in Life

Jack was there to see many changes in my life. He met some of my high school friends as we set off early on Saturday rides and was also present the day I first met Will, my future husband. Jack also went to college with me in Bristol, VA when I attended Virginia Intermont. He stayed at Maplewood Farm, a picturesque farm on rolling land with a large pond and many trails extending into the valley. It's very accurate to say that Jack was always a calming and therapeutic aspect in my life. During high school, because I was very often at the farm each day after classes, he provided a healthy outlet and alternative to activities where peer pressure was in full swing.

In my college years, time with Jack at Maplewood meant glorious days exploring the outdoors, practicing new techniques I was learning in my horsemanship program and nurturing a warm friendship with Jennie Placak, who cared for him. That blessed friendship lasted long after I left Virginia Intermont, actually until my friend, Jennie passed away in 1995.

On the day of my wedding in October 1992, it was to the barn to visit Jack where I spent the early hours of that bright happy day. All in all, over his 28 years with me, Jack lived in six different places and in each new environment, it didn't take long for him to fit in with a new herd. He even had a calming influence on other horses, too. One mare that we had for a time was especially flighty and given to moments of craziness. We blamed this on her time spent on the track in Kentucky. When she was turned out with Jack, they would run and kick and carry on. After settling down, I could always find them grazing together... she followed Jack everywhere through the fields.

Jack was also there to greet each of my babies when they came into the world in 1997 and 2001. To each he did the same, a sniff of their head, wide-eyed in seeming wonderment at something so small and making sounds he had never heard.

I've had several other horses in my life, beginning at age 6, but I never developed the bond with them that I did with Jack. I'm not sure exactly why this is, but that something special, that benevolent spirit always apparent in Jack, must have had something to do with it. He was also curious and kind to other animals. For example, two stories came to me from Angie, another friend that kept Jack on her farm in Scary Creek, WV during the mid 90s:

Once while going out to collect Jack and others from a pasture for their evening meal, Angie had a halter and lead on Jack and was making her way back to the barn. Jack was moving very slow in the tall grass and Angie turned back to encourage him to move on... but he kept going slow, as if searching for each new place to put his feet. Finally Angie halted, thinking maybe something was wrong with a hoof. As she turned to look down toward his feet she noticed the white ball of fur, her older dog nearly hidden in the grass, walking just underneath Jack! Jack had been aware and didn't want to step on him.

On another occasion, since Jack was kept in the stall periodically, one barn cat preferred Jack's robust rump to any other place in the barn for taking a nap. Angie said she had seen the cat snoozing in that warm spot and apparently Jack didn't mind at all.

Even as I brought several dogs with me to the barn, Jack greeted each one with curiosity, stretching out his head and neck to take in a sniff of the new critter. And, I swear, he liked to watch them. Even on his last day, it was another horse and a cat that were present to say good-bye.

Later Years

It is with some guilt that I write this because as life seems to move on at that incredible pace, with it comes inevitable changes. By 1999, the show arena days were long past and with the birth of our first child, the trail riding days began to fade. I still went for rides occasionally and often took my son to the barn, but these were the days of spending time grooming and mostly just watching Jack run in the fields. There is a great joy in that.

It was time well spent, as I recall our son scrubbing buckets, learning to brush Jack and clean his hooves and also how to ride bareback. Happy moments for us, but I wondered if Jack missed all the daily activity of the earlier years. Years that also included mentoring a young girl from an abusive home life by teaching her to ride and care for a horse. That episode taught me anew that Jack's gentle loving spirit had no boundaries. He brought joy into her life, too.

Jack's final years were spent on the lush property of Beauty Mountain Farm in Edmond, WV the home of Gary Reynolds and Laura Davis. I had moved him there in 2007 in order for him to be on a residential property, knowing he was not getting any younger and would need more supervision. Again, as had been the case multiple times, Jack brought me to cross the path of others who have become very good friends. I could not ask for more love, companionship or grassy fields to surround Jack in the senior years of his life. He enjoyed the company of not only Laura's family, but the gladness of other horses and a few llamas, too.

Jack had a history of good health and so, it was hard for me to watch him grow older and lose muscle mass and take on an "old man" frame. We had struggled to keep weight on him and I fretted about the winters, although his dense winter coat seemed to be enough to keep him warm.

On the 19th day of October, 2011 in Edmond, WV
was laid to rest the greatest horse I've ever known...

my beloved and most noble friend.

It is difficult to know where to begin in eulogizing my friend, Jack, or, Jackson, as I called him in especially proud moments. The memories are plentiful and go back a long way. How can I possibly encompass in writing his benevolent nature toward people and animals, his gentle disposition and the peace and joy he brought to my life?

I have to try because he deserves all the acclaim and honor I can bestow upon him; he gave far more than he ever received from me. This is the first part of three posts to honor the memory of a wonderful friend.

The Early Years

Little did I know in 1983, when Dad traded lumber for this lanky, unwanted, grade gelding, that he would become something far more than my hobby and after school activity. When I look back, considering my ignorance about proper riding and care and how he must have suffered for it, I cringe with guilt that such a good-hearted animal would be willing, still, to meet me at the gate the very next day.

I learned along the way and, thankfully, those days of ignorance were few. We learned together in fact, as he first became a trail horse and we explored so many paths together! Not just ambling our way through unchartered territory, but leaping over fallen logs, galloping through the woods, climbing steep muddy banks and traversing deep culverts on old strip mine jobs. We went swimming too, although I'm sure he was only willing because I asked it of him. He loved to run and I loved it, too. To feel that power in him with the sun on my face and wind in my hair; there's nothing quite like it in the world. Jack had 4 gaits: trot, canter, gallop and 5th gear. He hated to walk and always preferred to be first on our trail rides with others.

I often said that he ran like a freight train... that 5th gear was something else! You know that feeling you get when you’re passing someone who’s going the speed limit on a two-lane highway and you have to floor it because you’re runnin’ out of room in the face of oncoming traffic? Yeah. It was kinda like that. I think Jack would've made a great addition to the Pony Express in an earlier era.

Trails, Rails and a Great Trust

During one occasion on the trail, I came to know the heart of this horse in a poignant way. It was a summer day when our group of 15 or so set out for a day-long ride, leaving from my uncle's farm. We had packed our lunches and planned to ride up to an abandoned strip mine site where fields now boasted lush grass and provided ample space for picnicking. It was a wonderful time! I can remember laughing and joking all the way up the mountain that morning. After a good rest and lunch, we packed up to head back to the farm, returning by the same route.

On the way into the fields, we had to span a rocky man-made ditch that took a little effort and caution. Good trail horses know how to use their feet and cross places such as this with care. Jack had done a good job going over. On the return trip, however, he decided it would be far easier to skip all this slow sure-footed approach and simply leap the culvert in one bound. I wasn't on his wavelength. So, totally unprepared for this monstrous leap, I fell off. I didn't just fall...I did some kind of unique gymnastic maneuver that left me flat on my back, looking up at my horse's muzzle, with one ankle tangled in the rein! I can still recall that scene, some 20 + years later.

I can remember how he was breathing so hard and his head was pulled down slightly because of my ankle in the rein...and here is the remarkable thing: when the daze of what happened had past, I realized that I was laying on rocks in the culvert and Jack was precariously anchored on them, too, above me. Never did he make the slightest move to free himself or jump clear of the rocks onto the dirt road. He stood firm until I could get enough wits about me to free my leg and stand up.

At the end of our trail rides, worn out from a full day of riding, we'd make it back to the barn and as soon as the bridle came off, I would turn my back to Jack. This part he loved, for he would rub the sides of his face up and down my back to scratch those hard to reach places beneath the bridle. It felt good on my back, too. In winter, when my hands and toes would be numb from the frigid air, it seemed like bliss to slip my frozen fingers beneath the saddle blanket, next to his back and let the warmth seep in.

As my husband has said, you don't just have memories, you have eras of memories. I've always enjoyed the trails, but there were other eras in Jack's life that included the show ring. We tried our hand at barrels, but that was really just for fun. Where Jack really shone was in the jumper arena. This era lasted from 1985 - 1988. I had a trainer who told me Jack would never do well in equitation, his gait was too rough and choppy. Even so, we still entered the hunter classes occasionally and I was proud of Jack's effort. He did everything I asked of him, with the exception of walking at a slow enough pace. Jack came to life in the jumper ring, even if I usually held my breath all around the course!

Jack would rather knock a rail than to refuse a jump. He had heart and courage for a fairly small guy, at 15.3 h I clearly remember the day in Kingwood, WV when Jack dethroned the well bred Thoroughbreds we often competed against. He took top prize for going clear in the jump off and with record time! In a class where form didn't matter as much as effort and speed, Jack did very well. Dad was just as proud of him as I was.

"With love, I respect your care and concern for Izzy, for my sister and her family. But PLEASE take care in the information you are posting and twittering. If you don't know the facts, please contact me and I'll be glad to inform you. It's disturbing to read falsehoods through twitter and to know how fast that misinformation can travel. And above all, PLEASE DO NOT post messages to contact Izzy's parents for information, for interviews, for ideas, for updates...for anything. My sister is exhausted - EXHAUSTED! Her spiritual, mental and physical health is far more important than Izzy meeting Justin B. Please remember that as you continue to grow this community and, inadvertently, create a frenzy that may have detrimental effects on people I love the most. "

Notes of Encouragement

...so much going on right now! I miss writing and there is so much to tell that has happened this month. If we get a rainy cold weekend, I'll have the time to tell you more about it.

Calling Out Beauty: Izzy Update and Request

The following is what Jenny, Izzy’s mom, posted today via facebook:

"Thank you all so much for your many prayers. The results of the biopsy showed that the cancer (rhabdo) is back. The tumor is in her upper chest right above her lungs. We've decided to do radiation but we're reluctant to do anymore chemo. Our decision has been to keep her home with as much comfort and happiness as can be. These past few weeks Izzy was in tremendous pain, but this morning she woke up with none :) (answered prayer) Don't be saddened for us because the Lord has given us much peace about this and he continues to show us that he's INDEED with us and VERY much in control. "If I smile, the devil will be mad. So I'm gonna keep smiling" ~ Izzy McManaway Isaiah 11:6 "

Even if you have already read her update, please read and share the following request:

We love each and every one of you who remember us and pray for Izzy. Jenny has told me that she survives on your prayers, can feel them and this is why she & Corey have peace.

When you see them out at the grocery store or sporting events or at the park with the kids, please share a smile and your love, but please do not share your sadness at this latest news. Please do not ask Jenny or Corey to relay all the details of tests, scans and the information on rhabodomyosarcoma. It is exhausting for them to go over this again and again and again...somewhat defining each day by this one trial. They have many more blessings in their life and these they would love to share with you! Pass on your love and ask about Izzy’s sisters as well.

Take care in sharing your words, especially when Izzy and her sisters are present, as they are most sensitive to your emotions. Help to create an atmosphere of praise, faith and thanksgiving, as this is the type of atmosphere that Jesus always created before a healing miracle. Do not give in to your sadness or despair, especially when you encounter Jenny & Corey in your day to day life; they remain steadfast in God’s love and healing mercy and I ask the same of you.

Met. Anthony’s words to call out beauty in others is most fitting at this time. Do not look and see a child distorted or suffering, but instead, look at a child and see life, spirit, truth and nothing but heaven’s blessing:

"Unless we look at a person and see the beauty there is in this person, we can contribute nothing to him. One does not help a person by discerning what is wrong, what is ugly, what is distorted. Christ looked at everyone he met, at the prostitute, at the thief, and saw the beauty hidden there. Perhaps it was distorted, perhaps damaged, but it was beauty none the less, and what he did was to call out this beauty." ~ Metropolitan Anthony of Sourozh of blessed memory.

What Demons Dread

A friend just posted this "bumper sticker" on Facebook and it's too good not to share:

I love it! I think I’ll print it out and tape it to my desk where I’ll see it each morning. It begs the question, just how to be that woman? Read Proverbs 31 and you’ll get a glimpse into the life of a godly woman, to whom the demons have reason to fear. She rises early, works with her hands, extends help to the poor and needy, is cloaked with strength and dignity, speaks with kindness, looks after her family, is trustworthy and fears the Lord. Her children bring blessings to her and her husband praises her.

My children asked recently, what exactly does it mean to fear the Lord? To be afraid of God? they wondered. I told them a fear of the Lord means to fear displeasing their Heavenly Father, to fear being out of fellowship with their Creator. To have a loving reverence for His will, as their King and Lord.

In days gone by, I regarded a “godly” woman as one who is mild, submissive and never heard. A pious woman, but not necessarily one that I admired or wanted to imitate. This has to do more with my pride and being a Type A personality than anything else. Now, a few decades later, I see differently.

I’ve realized that the people I admire most, those who have wisdom, patience and spiritual strength and stamina are godly. They fear the Lord. They are meek and they are the strongest people I’ve ever met. They are the ones who are slow to anger, obedient in prayer and usually quiet and reserved when conflicts exist around them. They are the listeners who think much before acting. They are the anchors in a chaotic sea because they are close to Christ. I want to be one.

As per my last post, our family is going through some trials. My sister is exhausted in every regard and I wonder why it is that God cannot grant her just one restful night sleep. So many are praying for her; does God not hear? She told me, “I feel like satan is right there -- right beside me just waiting for me to cave, to curse God”

I can hear Coach (if you’re a fan of Facing the Giants, you’ll know who I mean) yelling in our ear, ‘It’s right now! It’s right now that you have to be strong! When you want to quit, when you’re tired and worn out and can hardly breathe, it’s now that you have to dig in with all you’ve got’

Demons tremble at the name of Christ, for they know of the spiritual reality of God and His heavenly kingdom. (James 2:19) We cannot give up, we will not give in, we will finish the race well. God have mercy on me to be stronger than I am †

Izzy, Myrrh-Streaming Icons and Prayer

Many of you have followed the story of my niece, Izzy, and her battle with cancer. She continues to do remarkably well since her leg was amputated this spring. She gets around just fine with her colorful prosthetic leg and enjoys showing her friends how she can paint the toenails on her artificial foot. She has enjoyed cheerleading most recently and I cannot overstate the exuberance and hearty spirit of this 4 year old little girl. Just last evening I was at my sister’s house, joining Izzy and her sisters in a round of “Just Dance” on the Wii.

You would never know by watching her that she experiences pain each day -- now in her back and chest. The most recent body scan showed a “suspicious area” in her upper back and now the family travels north once again, to Morgantown, to have this area biopsied. Please pray with us? This is scheduled for Thursday morning, October 6.

Earlier in the week, I was telling of my experience from the weekend to Izzy and her mom (my sister), Jenny. I, along with my daughter, went to the Hermitage of the Holy Cross in order to take part in their 25th Anniversary Celebration. View the video of this special event below:

It was a wonderful experience; the cold temperatures and steady rain did nothing to dampen this outdoor occasion. How could it? The miraculous myrrh streaming Hawaiian-Iveron Icon of the Mother of God was present and it streamed myrrh throughout the liturgy. All of the pilgrims were blessed and anointed by His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York. Wanting to share this blessing with Izzy, I touched my scarf to the anointing myrrh on my forehead so I would have something of that blessed moment to bring to her.

Myrrh streaming icons are a miracle and even the Orthodox faithful meet them with awe; how much more so to Protestants who have never heard of them. I’m not sure Izzy understood what I was trying to tell her about the blessing and the beautiful scent of roses that now clings to that scarf... but she sat still and allowed Jenny & I to pray over her. God is so good!

Please continue to pray with us, for Izzy’s continued health and amazing spirit...she has touched so many lives through this ordeal with cancer!!

Spiritual Warfare 101

Standing firm against the first fiery darts of the enemy.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12

A bit presumptuous of me, being neither a theological scholar nor the slightest bit wise, to share with you something of the nature of our enemy. It’s the brutal reality that prompts me to write this, nothing more.

Since my last entry, I’ve spent more than a few hours educating myself about child sex trafficking in the U.S and the non-profit organizations that help the children who are victims of this horror. I’ve spent time talking with people who successfully operate non-profits and also counselors, to understand what children need most who have been victims of sex slavery. In all essence, it comes to this, again and again: we strive not against flesh and blood, but against the powers of darkness. My entry today is to encourage you to own Ephesians 6:13-18; to heed these words from St. Paul, to truly understand, not just in a poetic sense, but to stand against the powers of darkness. Our Mighty God, our Father of Lights provides the armor, but we must put it on!

13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Apart from Holy Scripture and the wisdom of the saints, it is to J.R.R Tolkien and C.S. Lewis that I attribute much of my spiritual growth and understanding. The imagery from Lord of the Rings is befitting to illustrate the weapons of our enemy, those flaming arrows and wicked hands; our enemy is savage, consuming and demoralizing... and yet -- our enemy cannot comprehend the Light.

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” -St. John 1:5

This verse spells victory, if we did not already know of Christ’s victory over death upon His crucifixion, burial and glorious Resurrection. Only the Light knows and understands the darkness. It is because of the Light that darkness is overcome, only because of Christ using a weapon of the enemy, that the enemy is overcome.

My own experience teaches me important lessons about spiritual warfare and the lesson driven home recently is this: the first flaming arrow of the enemy is to shock and overwhelm the senses in order to render paralysis and inactivity.

Take notice of how you or those around you react to daily news. I’ve observed that some pass over harsh headlines, while others dwell on them. Some tune in to follow courtroom sagas for care or concern or entertainment and others look away entirely, either in denial or apathy. And, most of all, when it comes to really ugly stuff, like crimes against children, some are rendered dazed and numb while others sob and fall depressed. I’ve been in that dazed and numb category too long. It’s in recognizing this first flaming dart of our enemy that allows us to dig in to higher ground.

I am blessed to know some beautiful souls -- people that have overcome great trials in life and use their energies and time to bring joy, solace and comfort to other hurting souls. Here is a beauty on this earth! This is the God-given light in the human soul that no darkness can overcome. You can find this Light in the darkness of communist prisons, the death camps of Nazi Germany and upon the cross at Golgatha. Darkness cannot overcome it, will never overcome it. This is the Truth and what should be gird about our waist as we contemplate wickedness around us. We can fall to our knees in despair or we can stand firm.

Our enemy would have us in despair because there we are useless for the Kingdom of Heaven. Despair is a ploy of satan, a tool to keep you from responding to the Truth of God. According to Tolkien, despair is a mistake, for no one knows all ends; hope is born of Jesus Christ. Did those not despair who loved our Lord and witnessed him murdered on the cross? And were they not mistaken to have despaired?

One of my many faults is to do nothing in the face of wickedness... to give in to shock or fear, disbelief or despair. I’ve learned that to do nothing is to do something for the enemy. And so, I’ve resolved to dig in...to get past that first fiery dart and make it to higher ground where I can be useful to God. Please pray for me, a sinner.

thoughts on Pink Floyd, Atlanta, and the turning away...

Maybe it’s my cool, misty celtic mood today, which is kind of a mix between the power and strength of the proud-warrior pose and the wicked smash of a reality that won’t go away. A strange place to be and I’m writing to help figure out what to do with it.

I love Pink Floyd, although my husband likes to tease and say that I’m only a “recent” fan since I only started following them in the 80s after the release of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Music, instrumentals and voice, have a way of centering issues hard to deal with. Issues that writers or photographers - the storytellers- struggle to fully encompass. I think this is true whether you wrestle with the right words to pray for forgiveness and discover a welcome solace in Bach or Beethoven, or find no words to speak your anger over a political or moral issue, yet find a nodding agreement to the lyrics or tune of _____________. The same is true of laments, those haunting melodies, whether by chant or instrument that carry our prayers and grief toward heaven. Music transcends.

And so it is that I tuned in to listen to Pink Floyd today. On the Turning Away, to be exact. I don’t know any other modern song that speaks so accurately to my feelings of outrage, hopelessness and a sleeping strength. When a news item catches my attention and I’m reminded for the nth time that day of how miserable the human condition is, I find a strange comfort in the music and lyrics of David Gilmore...

"Don't accept that what's happening

Is just a case of others' suffering

Or you'll find that you're joining in

The turning away"

"...Using words you will find are strange

And mesmerised as they light the flame

Feel the new wind of change

On the wings of the night

No more turning away

From the weak and the weary

maybe it’s because the words remind me I’m not alone. I don’t want to just gawk and stare, to shed a tear and move on. I want to be heard... I want to shine light on darkness, believing that there is much good in people to stand against dark winds.

I’ve been a fan of Covenant Eyes for several years now; their work is commendable and worthy of our prayers. There’s a lot of information to be gained through their website and podcasts and I find myself glad to be a part of their community, even if it means being made aware of harsh realities. You know, the kind of stuff that makes you wish you were ignorant so you wouldn’t feel responsible for doing something about it. Stuff like this:

Did you know that according to the non-profit, Street Grace, Atlanta is the #1 city in the USA for child sex trafficking? I sure didn’t...I would not have even guessed ANY American city was on that global Top Ten. As part of a large campaign to combat this issue, several organizations against the exploitation of children have banded together with Whitestone Motion Pictures to create a 30-minute allegorical short titled, The Candy Shop. I’ll be honest with you...the trailer was enough to prompt me to prayer and info seeking. I hope you’ll learn more and pray, too.

can be so close to tears, but have to carry on through work or classes or parenting.

There was a beautiful woman I saw today and she was kind.

She was going through a divorce...

She had a black eye.

Russia more Christian than the USA?

From a land where atheism gave rise to the great beast of communism and the torture of human souls, is it possible that now, only a century later, this same land is leading the way in Christian spirituality? Well, spirituality may be a difficult element to quantify, but when considering the words and actions of Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev, it’s worth a pause to contemplate.

The truth is, Russia is rebuilding churches and monasteries -on a grand scale- lost during the aforementioned era of hell, and on the taxpayers dime. At last count, over $100 million (US) as of late summer 2010. And Vladimir Putin has openly praised the Russian Orthodox Church for “educating citizens in a spirit of patriotism and love of country, passing on love for spiritual values and history.”

Whoa! did you catch that? The Prime Minister is praising the church for teaching his citizens a love of country and spiritual values. Oh, that America would once again incorporate a love of country and spiritual values in our government schools. I can clearly remember the days of Mrs. Lewis’ 4th grade class, in the 70s, where we began each day reciting not only the Pledge of Allegiance but the Lord’s Prayer as well. And here we are, some 40 years later, watching the US government persecuting high school graduates, smashing their first amendment rights when they mention Jesus Christ in their graduation speeches or sending kids home, such as happened in CA last year for wearing a T-Shirt with an American flag on it...sigh. But I digress.

I don’t watch Larry King Live, but was interested to learn the story that emerged from his interview with Vladimir Putin in 2000. Even though Putin’s father was a militant atheist, his mother was an Orthodox Christian and attended church regularly, even during the time when the Church was under control of the state. She secretly arranged the baptism of her son and took him to church services with her.

As the story goes from the interview, she gifted to Putin a simple cross necklace when he was to visit Israel and asked him to have it blessed at the Tomb of the Lord. This Putin did; the cross became very sacred to him and he had it with him always. Later, while visiting his dacha, a fire broke out due to complications with the sauna and Putin literally had to run to safety; he had taken the cross off just prior to entering the sauna. Sifting through the remains of his cottage, to his great surprise, the simple aluminum cross was found, intact.

Putin said of this event, “I was surprised completely when one of the workers, just muddling through those ashes of the remnants, found that cross intact. And the house fell, that was a surprise, a revelation, and therefore I always now keep it with me.”

Or, consider the fact that in 2010 Russia celebrated a new annual holiday to mark its anniversary of Christianity, originally adopted as the state religion by Prince Vladimir over 1,000 years ago. This was supported and approved by President Medvedev and even though some of the populous criticized the endorsement of religion by the Kremlin, the overwhelming majority seem to be enthusiastic and full of hope for the future of Russia’s religious landscape. Patriarch Kirill of Moscow,(the spiritual leader of the Russian Orthodox Church) speaking at the liturgy in Kiev to mark this event said, “Facing aggressive atheism and resurgent paganism we remain firm in our belief in God.” Celebrating this holiday at Veliky Novgorod’s St. Sophia Cathedral, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said, “This was an event of colossal significance ...Russia made a historical choice.”

Can you even imagine an address by Barak Obama in which he praised the Christian influence on our founding fathers ...without also mentioning the importance of Ramadan?

More recently, Patriarch Kirill visited Mordovia, an area that housed two of the largest prison camps in the Soviet Union. During the 1930s, over 30,000 prisoners were held in these camps, including priests, scientist and artists. Many of them were executed for holding views that opposed the communist vision, “enemies of the people” they were called. Before the Bolshevik Revolution, some 600 churches and 14 monasteries existed in Mordovia. Following the revolution, all were either destroyed or closed.

Now, what began in the 1980s is ripening. Cathedrals are being rebuilt which has renewed the city’s vision for beauty and holiness. Presently, 300 churches and 13 monasteries have been rebuilt and surrounding areas have been inspired by the construction to plant trees, clean the streets and in essence, carry on the beautification initiated by the building of churches. Of the transformation of Mordovia, the Patriarch said, “This is a good illustration to the idea that any economic, political or social changes must begin with a spiritual revival.”

Amen.

It is this essence that I find the most beautiful element of Russia --the depth and breadth of her spirituality. What happens when you take a nation with a 1,000 year history of Christianity as her foundation, suppress her in the vice of communism and then release her? When crushed, she releases her most exquisite perfume. As Pastor Wurmbrand ( a Lutheran minister who survived 14 torturous years in communist prisons) so eloquently stated:

"A flower, if you bruise it under your feet, rewards you by giving you its perfume"

Closer to home, Russia is reaching out to American evangelicals like never before. Even though some may regard the recent changes in the Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations policy regarding the limitations of evangelical groups to do ministry work in Russia, I see a country that values her spiritual traditions and history. Why shouldn’t a nation be suspect and limit the scope of religious organizations who take no heed of the culture or history of the people they are ministering to? (Hello, America?!) As an example, this scrutiny has put Russia in an elite world role by disallowing Gulen schools. Russia has said the schools promote an aggressive Muslim education and as such, they are not welcome.

It is clear that Met. Hilarion wants a positive dialogue with American Christians just as much as Christians from other parts of the world, knowing there is common ground among conservative positions, such as abortion, the family and marriage. I hope to see more Americans, especially evangelical Christians, taking notice of what’s going on with our brothers and sisters in Christ in the treasure-filled land of Russia. A land that is home to a people who love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ and who, by the spiritual mettle they’ve gained, have much to impart to us. †

Amy Winehouse, Addiction & Paths Through the Wilderness

Since my brother-on-law has embarked upon a new journey as a student working towards a degree in counseling, I’m enjoying a new dimension in our conversations and the concepts he shares with me about this latest field of study.

I’ve long held an interest in psychology, probably spending way too many hours reading things that are fascinating to me, but maybe not all that edifying. Exploring questions like “Why do people act the way they do?” and “Why do some seem bent on a path of self-destruction, even when other options are available?” often occupy my thoughts when reading the news. I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to figure people out but even so, I’ve made a few interesting discoveries worth blogging about.

A few weeks ago, I couldn’t tell you anything about Amy Winehouse, except that she was a singer ..or maybe an actress. However, thanks to Yahoo headlines, I end up reading about all sorts of unimportant things, such as the lives of the famous.

Amy Winehouse’s death intrigued me, from a psychological viewpoint, because of her apparent history of self-destructive behavior, including the use of opioids. It’s no surprise to most of us that fame and self-destruction seem to go hand-in-hand. What seems apparent, that fame begins a break-down of the essence of a human being, must become so distorted for those swimming in the mire. I’ve noticed that “successful” (my definition, which has nothing to do with monetary value) celebrities are those who have learned to live outside of themselves...finding satisfaction and relevance in giving back to others through charities or other organizations they deem “the greater good”. The ones who have become sophisticated in protecting their privacy and value the balance between work and family. They’ve learned a technique for staying sane among an environment that promotes lascivious, sycophantic relationships; a way to remain connected to that beautiful emotive core of the human soul.

For others enveloped by fame, well, the lure of drugs is too powerful, too immediate and pleasing to pass by. With drugs, opioids in particular, the user discovers a way to insulate themselves from the wild emotions and pain the body/soul/spirit now has to deal with. Painful emotions that stem from lack of self-worth, mistrust in relationships, being false to self, employing a counterfeit paradigm for making decisions --in essence, the death of morality brings these painful thoughts and feelings. Fame and it’s twisted tentacles appear to be a very wicked tool in the possession of our enemy. With one hand he coaxes and flatters, with the other he numbs the spirit, with the goal to kill the body and snatch a soul. And with opiates like heroin, the physical body becomes utterly dependent upon these pain-killers, which replaces the body’s natural way of coping with pain through endorphins.

As I was reading about Amy’s death and following up to learn more about opioids, a question in an addiction recovery forum caught my attention. A young man wrote to say that he had been addicted to hydrocodone/oxycodone for about 6 years. He was now on his way to full recovery and talked about the healing process. The question burning in his mind was, [paraphrase] “Does anybody have any opinions on opiates or other depressants and their potential ability to inhibit spiritual growth?” I’ve been thinking on that one.

Knowing that we are created by God, in His Divine Image, of three parts: body, mind and spirit, how can an illness in one part not affect the others?

As an Orthodox Christian, I know that to nourish my spirit, I need communion with my Creator. I know I need to be in His Word, to be praying, fasting, receiving Holy Communion and doing my part to aid the suffering. These are activities that nourish the spirit. It seems reasonable to say that to do the opposite of these things, would diminish the spirit. I’m speaking of gluttony/over-indulgence, being self-centered, being ignorant or apathetic to God’s Word, or inflicting pain on self or others. These indulgences, derived from laziness and lack of self-control, dull sensitivities and cause a disconnect between our three-part nature. So, yes, absolutely opiates can suppress spiritual growth, inasmuch as these drugs can be used by our enemy to sever the bonds of harmony in a human being.

Interestingly, as I was talking with a friend about this topic, we went on to discuss morphine, codeine, and other drugs in the opioid family that are used in the medical community to alleviate severe pain from trauma (i.e, Izzy!). How can the spiritual needs of these patients be met whilst they receive heavy doses of pain-killers? It’s a far-reaching question if you consider this statistic: The USA makes up only 4.6% of the world’s population, but consumes 80% of its opioids -- and 99% of the world’s hydrocodone, the opiate in Vicodin.*

What is the spiritual ramification of a country that is dulled from its senses?

I believe it’s easy to read an article about someone famous like Amy Winehouse and think - wow, that’s really a life-style on the edge - and how unrelated it is to our own faults and sins. But is it really so unrelated? or does it just have so much momentum and exposure that in all its raw ugliness, it grabs our attention - for the tiniest bit - like train-wrecks wont to do?

I was asked once, “Do you believe there are any healthy addictions?” The jury is still out on that one. I suppose it depends on how you define “addiction”. I would never say, “I’m addicted to God” because it sounds ridiculous, but yet, I cannot live apart from Him. The term, addiction, has such a negative connotation. Is an exercise addiction healthy? Well, not if the exercise routine steals time away from another important aspect of life, like family needs or going to work.

My brother-in-law & I were talking about the nature of addiction once and he spoke of a beautiful mental image that stayed with me. He spoke about how, with addicts (of various sorts - drug users, shop-lifters, video-gamers,etc.) the thought process becomes so routine and ingrained as to become a sense of comfort to the person, even if the consequences to their actions cause pain to themselves or loved ones. To overpower that “pathway” of routine thought patterns, is to break something very commanding and forceful - and this, too, can be painful but oftentimes necessary.

The beautiful part of this mental image comes as I considered those “pathways” for healthy thoughts and actions. He said, [paraphrase] ‘Picture a path in the wilderness...one you wish to go on and you walk it over and over and over until it becomes such a familiar place, so ingrained that you won’t want to depart from it’ An aha! moment came... isn’t this exactly the nature and mystery of prayer? I sometimes go to my prayer corner angry...or tired...or apathetic. Sometimes I forget those I want to pray for, sometimes I fumble over my words and my mind wanders. But I go.

I go to that place in the dark morning hours, light the candle before our icons and speak to God. I return there at night to pray before sleeping and it occurs to me that even when my attitude isn’t just right, I am going - I am moving on a pathway that is beautiful and meet and right. A pathway that nourishes my spirit regardless of my bad temperament. And how much more so of the saints?

Those spiritually mature people who walk the high road and experience a taste of heaven on earth, inhaling the fragrant breath of God on their journey. They walk a path set before them by other spiritual giants who desired to be a part of the Kingdom of Heaven- the road marked by honesty in confession, repentance with humility, forgiveness with love, integrity, honor and a continual pursuit of Truth. A road that we, as followers of Christ, are invited to follow. To paraphrase a quote I read recently, ‘God does not tell us to avoid sin in order to punish us --He tells us to avoid sin because it hurts us’. If only men knew the glory that awaited them in heaven!

If only they knew.

Izzy's New Leg

Well, I'm sure you've been wondering and so, without further ado, here she is with her brand new leg, smiling for her daddy...

Her beautiful hair is growing back, she's all smiles and truthfully, I might have more photos to share if I could get her to stay still long enough. When she's not swimming or riding the 4-wheeler with her cousin or riding her bike, you just might find her playing with Charlie (her lovable, extremely tolerant WV Brown Dog) , playing with her baby dolls or teaching her ignorant aunt about the simplicity of using her new leg. You can't tell from this photo, but they made the shell (the part that her limb fits into) hot pink -- just for her.

I'll have to get more photos to share, as you just have to see how the toes were made. She can actually wear flip flops again : ' )

My Little Prayer Book

I've been so thrilled to finally pull this together! I posted the following on my photography blog yesterday:

For over a year now, I’ve been working on a project close to heart, an illustrated prayer book. Natural Elements Photography is founded upon scenic images of West Virginia and beyond and it seemed only natural to accompany the grace of prayer with the loveliness of creation.

I am delighted to tell you the book is nearly here! Because I'll only be ordering these in limited quantities, I’ll be taking pre-orders through the end of August.

The book has 26 pages, sized at 8x6” for an easy travel companion, soft-cover with a full page photo to accompany each prayer. The spiral binding is intentional, as I wanted to have a book that would lay open easily on a desk-top or prayer corner. The last page contains brief notes about a selection of the prayer authors. The photos include some of the most popular from my Images of WV Collection and several new photos made in the mountains of North Carolina.

Some prayers and meditations are probably very familiar, such as the Lord’s Prayer, Psalm 23 and the Beatitudes while others may be less recognized, such as the prayers of the saints from the ancient church of the 3rd and 4th century. There are morning prayers, prayers for traveling, prayers for children & forgiveness and prayers before going to sleep.

Since I’ve been a guest speaker to a variety of groups about prayer and find it an essential part of spiritual health, I wanted to create a way to enrich and encourage the daily prayer life of others and possibly introduce some to the thought-provoking and powerful prayers of ancient Christian saints.

Music of Marium Bria

Let me share with you my multi-talented friend, Marium Bria. She is a photographer, a painter, a writer, and musician...as well as a wife and mother of three. She's told me on occasion that her talents are a curse because they're always pulling her in different directions, but from my view all I see is pure gifts and perseverance. I first mentioned Marium's talents on this blog in 2007; I am so delighted that she's recorded her first CD, simply titled, "Marium Bria".

The cd contains 10 tracks, all written by Marium; all vocals and instrumentation by her as well. Her sound is soft and evocative, her lyrics often reminiscent of days gone by and the innocence of love. My favorite is "Great Big World". I can't help but compare her sound to one of my other favorites, Norah Jones. Marium may get tired of hearing that, but I can't think of a higher compliment. Her family is blessed to hear such music at home, now the rest of the world can enjoy it, too. I'm so proud of you, girl!

Follow Up to Women's Health Series

As much as I want to tell you that I found a magic bullet (as with Zoloft!) with the Women to Women (W2W) program, I didn’t. I continue to believe W2W is a great resource for educating yourself about hormonal changes, dietary considerations, and phytotherapy (the use of plants for healing purposes), but the vitamin/supplement regimen didn’t work 100% for me. This is because between the 60 and 90 day mark, I began to have intestinal ills that I attribute to the regimen.

I had halted the regimen all together when I came down with what the rest of the family had during the winter, some type of flu. We were sick with fever, fatigue, intestinal ills, headache and loss of appetite. After two weeks of this, when our vigor was finally restored, I eased back into the routine of vitamins and the Herbal Equilibrium. It was at this point that I could not get my intestinal health back on track. I tried altering the schedule, one packet instead of two, vitamins and no herbal supplement, and vice-versa , and then taking only the calcium/fish oil in the evenings...no combination seemed to work. From reading on the W2W website, I knew if I called for a consult, they would probably recommend a probiotic. Well, with already taking 5 to 10 tabs a day, I did not want to add something else to the mix. So I stopped all of it. And within another week, the intestinal ills went away entirely.

The good news is that this was also the time of emerging from a very cold/dark winter into one of the most delightful springs I can remember. With the advent of sunshine, warm days and outdoor activity, nearly all of my symptoms (fatigue, fuzzy thinking, depression, irritability, mood swings) disappeared. I also began a new part-time job that, serendipitously, led to a new focus and decreased stress.

I’m aware of the damage stress can do to a body and so, it is with caution that I attribute the episode of intestinal ills to the W2W program. I am only self-diagnosing; since I live with chronic stress, I cannot be certain of the cause-effect relationship since I did take the vitamin/supplement regimen without problem for 60 days.

With certainty I can attest to these things that made me feel better:

-prayer

-getting at least 8 hours of sleep per night

-drinking LOTS of water (8 to 10 glasses per day)

-stress management, such as yoga, meditation, spending time with friends

-strenuous outdoor exercise (not just a walk through the park, but cardio such as climbing hills and stairs)

-limiting caffeine and sweets

The advent of spring and the internal changes it wrought made me consider seasonal affective disorder (SAD) to which some have recommended light therapy. I don’t know. I probably won’t go out and invest in a special light to use through the darkness of winter, but I may consider increasing my intake of Vitamin D through those months. Also, when it comes time for shorter days, colder temps and gray skies, I’ll be sure and keep up the outdoor exercise -- I think it’s an ace.

In the meantime, I go soon for a complete physical and will hopefully have the opportunity to discuss much of this with my new MD. Hormonal imbalances are not fun and for me, at least, I’ve found no quick & easy method for dealing with it. I continue to approach my health in a holistic way, believing that being created in the image of God constitutes three parts, mind, body and spirit - all of which need to be nurtured to create a healthy whole.

In my time in the blogosphere, I realize I've been mostly drawn to read the blogs of other Orthodox moms & dads, the insightful words of priests and khourias, but not so much the writings of our younger generation. No reason for that really... but I see I've been missing out.

How refreshing to see the creativity, the zeal and faithfulness of young Orthodox Christians. This blog has 9 contributors and offers thought-provoking content, not the least of which has been a view of christian activity on college campuses. Please check them out & keep them in your prayers †
